How to improve your memory?

Memory as defined by psychology is process through which we encode, store and retrieve information. The meaning of encoding means to register, Storing means to put it in a permanent memory and retrieving refers to recalling. This is how memory’s process works. There are people with sharp and blurred memory. There are various medical reasons to justify this; however we can follow these steps to improve our memory.

1.  Try and use all your senses

Usefulness of using all the senses present while reading or learning has been proved by science. It is being said that one can learn more efficiently if one rds aloud. While others tend to say otherwise .We here would recommend you to try both of them out and see for yourself what works out better for you.. If we use all the three senses that s listening, reading and talking , our brain tends to process information efficiently and can help you in retain information for a longer time.

2. Keep repeating to learn better

There is a saying in English “Practice makes it perfect”. This tells us that if we keep doing a thing repeatedly, we can master that thing. There is a concept of motor which can explain the effect of repeating an activity. Have you ever observed that why a pianist can play a piano without even looking at the keys. Or how can we type without looking at the keyboard? Or how can you ride a bicycle without even wondering about peddling or balancing? The answer to all these questions is the same ‘practice’

3. Use a story to link the concepts

We sure can recall some of the stories that we listened to as kids. We can also recall all the things that were associated with the story. We have also known that stories can help us in remembering things because it it can make brain multiple parts work together. If we try to recall a part from a story then we can easily do it and link it up with characters and answers. That is why stories can help in improving memory.

4. Group Study

This was the best method that I used to practice in my college days Well, this is one of the method that I can recall from my school days . Group students that are sitting together, reading and teaching each other about the new concepts.  If you read at your own and try to recall what you have read, you won’t succeed. If you read minor portion of a chapter and rest being taught by someone, you can retain it better in you’r memory. This is why group study is better and fun.

5. Concept of keywords

While improving your vocabulary for better communication, you must have used mnemonics. Mnemonics are used to associate a word with some keyword or some image. For example, grovel is a word which is used as an mnemonics which means to kneel. If you want to remember this word , you can relate it to the phrase “If you need to grow well, you have to grovel in front of your manager” in a form of sentence for better understanding.  Now, you have a picture of a manager (pictorial depiction) and a phrase to remember this word. This is how you can come up with single keywords that are commonly known as mnemonics, phrases to remember something for a long time.

6. Visualization

Have you ever wondered why child loves stories that leave a good impact? Why parents and doctors force too much on stories on parents? There is a simple reason behind this. Once you read out a story to a child, it start visualizing the scene and depicting the scene. This helps in the development of brain and eventually memory visualization. Few students still believe in the concept of visualization while studying and they perform better at academics and other activities as well. You can also relate visualization with the concept of Keywords. As I pointed out the example of kneeling before a manager, you can retain the meaning of grovel. This is an example of visualization.
